How to store Shea Butter
Our high quality shea butter can be stored at a normal room temperature and has a long shelve life of 12-18 months.

The best way to store shea butter is in a air tight container - keep away from sunlight, heat & water.

Shea butter that is lower quality than ours can have a reduced shelve life of as low as 6 month - this can be because the the butter may be contaminated with heavy metals, mold and high moisture content. Our butter if free of the above.

Shea butter is able to resist auto-oxidation due to the presence of natural anti-oxidant like Vitamin E.

Refrigeration will prolong the lifespan of shea butter, but all natural products deteriorate after some time, so refrigeration will not preserve shea butter forever.

How can I tell the shea butter is not good anymore?

Bad shea butter changes the color to plain white and smells bad, like rancid oil. The most accurate way to tell would be to do tests in a laboratory. To ensure quality, our shea nuts are tested before they are used. Our standart is a very low FFA* of <2%. The lower the FFA* is, the higher the quality. If the FFA* is equal or higher than 10% it is no longer good for human use.

*FFA stands for "Free Fatty Acid". Sheabutter is made up of special moleucles which are bonds of three fatty acids. When shea butter is exposed to air, metals and moisture , oxidation takes place and result in the break up of the fatty acid bonds to give Free Fatty Acid (destroyed butter moleucles.) The level of FFA  in a given oil/oil seed is an indication of it's quality.
